He helps French and Spanish businesses get found on Google and cited by AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews). Google's AI Overviews reached Spain on March 26, 2025, followed by AI Mode in October 2025. France, the last major European market without them, got both on July 22, 2026. For a business, the question is no longer whether these AI-generated answers will change its traffic, but by how much, on which searches, and what can actually be done about it.
I have gathered the most solid studies published in 2025 and 2026 to give you reliable numbers, not impressions.
What the studies actually measure
Four independent studies, using different methods, reach the same conclusion: fewer clicks when AI answers directly.
| Study | Method | Main finding |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs (February 2026) | 300,000 keywords | Position-one CTR 58% lower with an AI Overview (versus 34.5% in the same study in April 2025) |
| Pew Research Center | Browsing behavior of 900+ US adults | 8% click rate with an AI summary versus 15% without |
| Randomized field experiment (Jan–Feb 2026) | Participants with and without AI Overviews | −38% organic clicks; zero-click searches from 54% to 72% |
| Sistrix (Germany, February 2026) | German market data | Position-one CTR drops from about 27% to 11% with an AI Overview |
The key point: the effect is getting stronger. Ahrefs used the same method one year apart, and the drop went from 34.5% to 58%. The German data is especially relevant for European businesses, since Germany was part of the same March 2025 rollout wave as Spain.

The good news: being cited changes everything
The most useful study for businesses comes from Seer Interactive: 53 brands, 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion impressions analyzed between January 2025 and February 2026. It shows that AI Overviews don't just reduce clicks, they redistribute them:
| Situation | Average organic CTR |
|---|---|
| No AI Overview | about 3.3% |
| AI Overview, your page is cited | about 2.1% |
| AI Overview, your page is not cited | about 0.9% |
In other words, at the same ranking, being cited in the AI answer more than doubles your clicks. Seer also sees a slight recovery: CTR on queries with an AI Overview fell to 1.3% in December 2025, then climbed back to 2.4% in February 2026. And queries without an AI Overview are becoming more valuable: their CTR rose from 2.8% in early 2025 to 3.8% in February 2026.
Another finding shared by several analyses: visitors who click after reading an AI summary are further along in their decision. Fewer of them, but often better qualified.
Which searches are hit hardest?
AI Overviews mostly appear on informational searches and questions: "how to…", "why…", "what is…". These are exactly the searches many businesses target with their blog. High-intent searches ("quote", "price", "near me", brand names, provider comparisons) keep more of their clicks, because people need to act on a website to get what they want.

A 5-step action plan for your business
1. Measure the impact on your own data. In Google Search Console, compare impressions and clicks before and after the rollout in your country (March 2025 for Spain, July 22, 2026 for France). Separate informational queries from commercial ones: that's where you'll see where traffic really dropped.
2. Identify your strategic searches that trigger an AI Overview. For your 20 to 30 most important searches, check whether an AI Overview appears and whether your site is among the cited sources. That is your new dashboard.
3. Make your pages easy to cite. A clear answer at the start of each section, sourced figures, an identified author with real expertise, and a visible update date. Google confirms it in its official guide published in May 2026: useful, original content that crawlers can access remains the main lever for visibility in its AI features.
4. Rebalance your content strategy. Keep publishing informational content to be cited and build awareness, but invest more in high-intent pages: service pages, case studies, comparisons, local pages, pricing.
5. Change your KPIs. Sessions alone are no longer enough. Also track impressions, your presence in AI answers, branded searches and, above all, conversions (quote requests, calls, sales).
Frequently asked questions
Will AI Overviews kill SEO traffic?
No. They sharply reduce clicks on informational searches, but commercial, local and branded searches still drive visits. Traffic is concentrating on fewer queries and on the sites AI cites.
Can you stop Google from using your content in AI Overviews?
Yes, with the usual directives (such as nosnippet or max-snippet), but this also limits your snippets in classic results. For most businesses it's a bad idea: being cited beats disappearing.
How long does it take to get cited in an AI Overview?
There is no guaranteed timeframe. AI Overviews rely on Google's index and ranking systems: a site that already ranks well on a topic, with reliable and up-to-date content, is far more likely to be cited quickly.
Conclusion
AI Overviews are not a passing trend: they are live in Spain and France, and their effect on clicks has grown stronger in a single year. The businesses that will do best are those that measure their exposure precisely, become sources AI cites, and focus on the searches that lead to a contact or a sale.
